About TENS
What is TENS?
"TENS" is the acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.

What is TENS unit?

A "TENS unit" is a pocket size, portable, battery-operated device that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals. The electrical currents produced are mild, but they can prevent pain messages from being transmitted to the brain and may raise the level of endorphins (natural pain killers produced by the brain).

How does TENS unit work?

TENS unit gently stimulates nerves and blocks pain signals before they can be received by the brain. It is especially popular in elderly patients, who may be severely affected by side effects from strong prescription medications; however, it may be used by anyone suffering from pain. TENS unit is generally used to relieve back pain, but many types and causes of pain may benefit from it, including arthritis.

How to use TENS unit?

With TENS, sticky electrodes are placed on the skin around the painful area. When the TENS unit is turned on, it delivers a light current through the electrodes to the skin and tissues just beneath it. Using TENS feels a bit like tingling, or pins and needles, though the intensity can be set high enough to make a muscle twitch.
Use the device for temporary relief of pain associated with sore and aching muscles in the shoulder, waist, back, neck, upper extremities (arm), and lower extremities (leg) due to strain from exercise or normal household work activities.
If your pain does not improve, you can try to increase the intensity and time or change the mode.
